Activity Report February 2003
We continue to attend and work on the Hunterdon County Growth Management
Plan Land Use Committee, still focused on general goals. County planner
Caroline Armstrong has stated that she wants to produce the best, most
ambitious plan possible, and we're on board for the long haul.
We attended two meetings of the Hunterdon County Solid Waste Advisory
Council, regarding amending their previous positive position on the Raritan
Valley Disposal recycling facility expansion to a waste transfer station.
Their location in Raritan Township is such that the proposed increased truck
traffic will be neither safe or supportable with our existing
infrastructure, and Raritan Township has already denied the expansion. The
state, however, was given authority in litigation, and DEP has issued a
draft permit, although Raritan recently testified against it. If the
council will reverse their position, presumably DEP would consider
withdrawal of the permit. The council has not yet achieved a quorom to
consider the matter at either meeting.
We continue providing advice on the Musconetcong Mountain case, which appears to
be heading in the right direction. Cannot provide details yet.
We are working on putting together a kids' outreach table for a Celebrate
Earth event on April 12 at the Echo Hills county park, run by Hunterdon
County Parks.
