Activity Report
February 2004

The Essex County Group hosted a very successful presentation at the Montclair Library last week with the Alaska Coalition. Juneau resident activist, Tim Miles gave a very interesting slide-show presentation on the Bush Administration's threat to open up more of the Tongass national Rainforest to logging roads. More than fifty people attended, well beyond our expectations. These same people went home with a greater appreciation of the wilderness of Alaska.

The Essex County group is still working to have the county do an energy audit through the Dept. of Energy's Re-Build America program where they examine energy efficiency in old and new construction in the county.

The group is continuing it's efforts to turn The Hatfield Swamp into a State Natural Wildlife resource area, preserved and protected from futher development that would negatively impact the environmentally-sensitive wetlands.

We are working to have the existing light-rail project in Newark expand and include more of the surrounding counties adjacent to the city of Newark.
