Sierra Club statement on Chris Daggett entering the gubernatorial race
The Sierra Club welcomes Chris Daggett into the gubernatorial race. We
believe that his candidacy will help elevate the environment as an issue in
this year's election.
The Sierra Club has worked with Chris Daggett for more than 20 years, when
he was a DEP commissioner under Tom Kean and as head of Region Two for the
EPA. We believe that he is one of the most knowledgeable people in New
Jersey when it comes to environmental policy.
Daggett has worked well under both parties. He chaired the Highlands Working
Group under Governor Florio. He chaired the DEP Permit Efficiency Task Force
under Governor Corzine. Daggett has the ability to work with people from
both parties as well as environmentalists, members of the business
community, and labor groups.
Daggett is known for his ability to bring together many divergent groups and
get them to reach a common ground in moving environmental policy forward. As
DEP commissioner, Daggett forced polluters to clean up New Jersey's water
ways by forcing sewer plants to upgrade.
In this election, we believe the environment is one of the most important
issues facing the people of New Jersey. By having someone of Daggett's
background in the race, it will not only elevate environmental issues but
also make the other candidates address them.
The Sierra Club is going through an open endorsement process. We have sent
the questionnaire to Daggett as well as the other major party candidates.
During this endorsement process, we take into account the issues as well as
the candidate's viability.
We look forward to this year's election and will work to make sure that the
environment is one of the top issues in this campaign.
