Sierra Club Supports Another Term for Fox NJ Sierra Club Statement supporting Jeanne Fox For Board of Public Utilities (BPU) Board President

Trenton, N.J. - The New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club strongly endorses BPU Board President Jeanne Fox for another term. We believe Jeanne Fox has done an outstanding job as President of the Board, under her leadership New Jersey has become a national leader in clean and renewable energy.

"Jeanne is a principled leader who knows how to get things done and has proven herself to be someone that we can trust. She is an intelligent, skilled, and thoughtful administrator with an incredible amount of knowledge on issues related to energy and public utilities," said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.

Fox's background shows a long commitment to clean energy and the environment. Fox was a regional administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during the Clinton Administration and Deputy Commissioner of Environmental Protection and Energy in the Florio Administration. She is the first former BPU staffer to become a commissioner of the BPU.

These experiences are an asset as the country attempts to turn around the economy by investing in green jobs and improving energy efficiency. The Obama administration has made investing in energy efficiency and clean energy sector a cornerstone of the recovery plan. An experienced administrator leading the BPU will help to ensure that New Jersey gets its fair share of federal investment.

"We strongly believe that Jeanne Fox deserves another term in order to help New Jersey meet its future energy needs with emphasis on providing clean and renewable energy," Tittel said.

During her tenure as Board Chair she has worked with the Sierra Club and other organizations to push the state's clean energy agenda forward. New Jersey has become second in the nation in the installation of solar panels, only behind California. The state is also emerging as a national leader in offshore wind; hopefully we will be the first state with offshore wind turbines. We are a leader on progressive energy policy, with a renewable portfolio standard of 30% by 2020 and an efficiency portfolio standard of 20% by 2020. Her leadership on the Energy Master Plan made it a national model. Her work on the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative positioned New Jersey as a leader in the reduction of greenhouse gases. Her efforts on Smart Growth have helped move development to areas with existing utility services.

"We think her leadership is critical to implementing the Energy Master Plan, Regional Greenhouse Gas Imitative, Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan, Renewable Portfolio Standard, and the Energy Portfolio Standard," Tittel said.

The Sierra Club has worked with Jeanne Fox for more than twenty years and knows that Fox cares deeply for the environment and the development of clean and renewable energy sources. We look forward to building on this relationship.
