Sierra Club Endorses Rob Andrews for Congress

Today the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of incumbent Congressman Rob Andrews for reelection in New Jersey's 1st District. "Rob Andrews has been a consistent voice for the environment in Congress," said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. "He's been a leader and a fighter for environmental protection and public health, both in New Jersey and across the nation."

With a lifetime League of Conservation Voters scorecard rating of 90%, Andrews is an environmental champion in Washington. He has been a leader in the fight against global warming, opposing drilling off our coasts that would keep us dependent on fossil fuels and would not solve our energy problems while supporting real energy policy changes that promote renewable technologies and energy efficiency. "Rob Andrews does not fall for Big Oil's lies," commented Tittel.

Andrews has also been a protector of public lands, including opposing drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Locally, Andrews has been a leader in opposing the Delaware Deepening project. This project is a $400 million boondoggle that will not only waste public money, but will have major negative impacts to the environment and our economy. Blasting the bottom of the river to make it 45 feet deep will not help bring in bigger boats to the Port of Philadelphia, but it will cause the salt line in the river to move up, threatening our fisheries - especially our oyster beds - and the drinking water for southern New Jersey. Congressman Andrews has recognized these facts and fought to avert this disaster.

"The residents of South Jersey know that they can always count on Congressman Andrews to safeguard the environment and the quality of life in New Jersey," concluded Gina Carola, Chair of the New Jersey Sierra Club's West Jersey Group.
