Dates for your Diary - 2003

January 27, 8:00 P.M. - How Dry We Are
Join us for a very informative program on the drought in New Jersey. Our speaker is Dennis Hart, Administrator of Water Supply and Drought Coordination at the DEP. He will tell us all about the drought, as well as what we can do to help ease the situation, both as individuals and as a group.

February 24, 8:00 P.M. - Green Buildings for a Better Environment
Green technology incorporates environmentally friendly design and construction in both commercial and residential settings. Jason Kliwinski, an architect with the Prisco Group, will present a program focused on commercial applications, using as an example the three schools in Howell Township on which he is currently working.

March 24, 8:00 P.M. - Xeriscaping
Low water use landscapes are even more important now, during the continued drought conditions. You can use very little water and still have a beautiful yard. Monmouth County Master Gardener, Bob Mellert, will show us how.

April 28, 8:00 P.M. - Travel Time
Join us for an interesting and enlightening visit to the land of the kiwi, New Zealand. Group member Marty Judd will stimulate our travel urge with slides of his vacation to this exciting land.

May 19, 8:00 P.M. - Green Night
PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN SCHEDULE -- THIS IS THE THIRD MONDAY OF THE MONTH!!! Here is your chance to do something positive for the environment. We will present current environmental issues -- you will write letters to elected officials and others. We supply the pens, paper, and stamps!

June 23, 8:00 P.M. - What's Bugging New Jersey Now?
The latest foreign insect to invade the Garden State is the Asian longhorned beetle. Join us as we learn about this potential scourge, and what is being done to stop it, from Barry Emens of the US Department of Agriculture, Plant Protection & Quarantine unit.

Sunday, July 27, noon, Turkey Swamp County Park
Annual Summer Picnic
Join the Jersey Shore Group for our annual picnic at Turkey Swamp Park, Georgia Road, Freehold Township. Please bring a dish to share. To coordinate food, and for more information and directions, contact Diane Doolittle at 732-765-0053 or d.doolittle@worldnet.att.net.

September 22 - Protecting our Bays
The Hudson-Raritan Estuary is one of the largest ecosystems in our regions, providing food, water, recreation and aesthetic resources to countless residents, human and otherwise. The natural wonders of this ecosystem are denied to these residents when pollution and illegal development contaminate or block access to the waters of the estuary. Join us as we learn about the Public Trust Doctrine, and the legal concept of Natural Resource Damages, from the NY/NJ Baykeeper, Andy Willner, who will explain what citizens can do to reclaim their rights to an unspoiled estuary system.

Friday October 17 from 8:00 - 11:30 P.M.
SPECIAL PROGRAM: Coffee house Folk and Irish music and lots of goodies to be held on Friday October 17 from 8:00 - 11:30 P.M. at St. James Episcopal Church, 69 Broad Street, Eatontown. This is the Jersey Shore Group (Sierra Club) annual fund raiser. Suggested donation is $10.00 per person. Bring your friends! For more information, contact Marinel Mukherjee, 732-780-8678.

October 27 The Cost of War
Do you really know what environmental, and human, damage is being done in Iraq? Have you read about the use of depleted uranium in the weapons deployed? Join us as Gavrielle Gemma, a key organizer of the Central NJ Coalition for Peace & Justice, explains to us the devastating effects of these weapons. Gavrielle has also worked with former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark, and was a member of the first Commission of Inquiry team to visit Iraq after the first Gulf War in 1991.

November 24 Autumn Green Night
Here is your chance to do something positive for the environment. We will present current environmental issues -- you will write letters to elected officials and others. We supply the pens, paper, and stamps!
